Can You Travel Forever? Do We Need Routine?
Does the act of going somewhere and forgetting your daily responsibilities only have value because it is rare? I mean could you really just go on vacation indefinitely?
Is this what retirement is supposed to be?
Is that why people get bored, feel the lack of purpose, and get a job as a greeter at Wal-Mart?
Vacation is the best. Don’t get me wrong. I live every day just waiting for the next one.
I plan and strategize and visualize and read wikipedia articles and search Google Maps for the next big thing. There is something inside me just dying to go somewhere and see something new.
You can read about the Eiffel Tower. You can see pictures of the Trevi Fountain. You can wander down a road using Street View in Suva, Fiji. Soon, AI will be so good, you will not even have to leave your couch. You will be able to go anywhere you want to. This is how time travel will become real. Some nerds in Silicon Valley will recreate every era in time and you will put on goggles and walk around and talk to Jesus and shit. Wild. So Wild.
But in the meantime, that’s not what does it for me. I have this burning desire to go to each spot in REAL LIFE.
I love how you have to wait in the airport. Board the plane. It’s like some weird portal. You can get in at a cold, rainy climate and end up in a sweltering, dry one. You never really know until you exit the plane and enter that new terminal.
Then you have to find transportation. Who knows how this is going to go.
Some cities have extensive train systems that are always on time.
Some make it much easier to jump in a taxi.
Some have allowed Uber and/or Lyft.
Some have comfy bus systems that leave every 15 minutes and cost 2 euros.
Finding your way to the city can be a challenge but it is so fascinating when you have to learn what everyone else is required to do.
And there is a language barrier. Many countries have citizens who know enough English to communicate with you. And it helps if you try to learn a few things as well. People appreciate you trying to come to where they are with what you are trying to ask or communicate.
This world is so huge and there are so many things to see. Some love the comfort of their own area and rarely leave. Others are constatnly traveling…..adventuring….searching for something inside that they probably can’t explain.
So back to vacationing. I’m not sure it is good to always be on vacation. If you had endless money and could just travel continuously - wouldn’t get old? Wouldn’t some weird part of you crave to go back to a routine where you made money and joked around with your friends?
I guess all I’m trying to say is that moderation is important in every realm. I love wild shit and crazy experiences but it feels good to get back to relentless productivity. I’m a weirdo-
