24 Hours in Kefalonia, Greece: Best Things to Do in One Day
Planning a quick adventure through Kefalonia? This guide covers a practical one-day route from Argostoli, with the waterfront, De Bosset Bridge, Makris Gialos Beach, Fanari Lighthouse, airport logistics, ferry options, and a few quick tips so the day does not turn into a sunburned guessing game.
Kefalonia is bigger than it looks when you are casually staring at a map and lying to yourself about how much you can do in one day.
If you only have 24 hours, do not try to conquer the whole island. Base yourself around Argostoli, add one good beach, keep the driving simple, and give yourself enough time to actually enjoy the place instead of turning the day into a rental car documentary.
Is One Day in Kefalonia Enough?
One day in Kefalonia is enough to get a feel for the island, but not enough to see it properly.
This is not the Greek island where I would recommend sprinting from one famous beach to another like you are collecting stamps. Kefalonia has mountains, beaches, villages, caves, ferry ports, and enough distance between things to punish an overconfident itinerary.
For a short stop, Argostoli is the easiest base. You can walk the waterfront, see De Bosset Bridge, get to Makris Gialos Beach, stop by the Fanari Lighthouse, and still have time for dinner without needing to emotionally recover in a parking lot.
The One-Day Itinerary
Start on the Argostoli waterfront at sunrise.
Walk De Bosset Bridge and see the Obelisk.
Head to Makris Gialos Beach for a swim, sunbed, and reset before the midday heat gets rude.
Return to Argostoli for lunch, coffee, or a simple waterfront break.
Drive or taxi to Fanari, also known as the Agioi Theodoroi Lighthouse.
Come back to Argostoli for dinner along the harbor or near the square.
Take an evening walk, get gelato, and let the island slow you down a little.
Getting There
Fly into Kefalonia Airport (EFL), officially Kefalonia Airport “Anna Pollatou.” From the airport, Argostoli is a short drive away, which makes it a strong base for a quick trip.
If you are coming by ferry from mainland Greece, Levante Ferries runs routes to Kefalonia, including the Kyllini to Poros route. From Poros, you will still need to drive or arrange transportation across the island, so do not forget that “arriving on Kefalonia” and “being in Argostoli” are not the same thing.
For one day, a small rental car makes the island much easier. You can do pieces of this route by taxi, but having your own car gives you more control and fewer moments where you are standing outside in the heat pretending waiting is part of the adventure.

What to Do in Argostoli
Argostoli is the easiest place to start if you only have 24 hours in Kefalonia.
Walk the waterfront early, before the day gets too hot and before everyone else remembers they also enjoy being near the water. The bay views are beautiful, the pace is calmer, and it gives you a simple first impression of the island without immediately overcomplicating your day.
De Bosset Bridge is the obvious short walk. It stretches across the bay and gives you one of those low-effort, high-reward travel moments where you get history, water, photos, and a little movement without needing a whole expedition.
Makris Gialos Beach
Makris Gialos Beach is a good one-day choice because it is close enough to Argostoli to make sense.
That matters. Kefalonia has more dramatic beaches, but a short trip is not always about finding the most famous place. Sometimes the best beach is the one you can actually reach, enjoy, and leave without destroying the rest of the day.
Go for a swim, rent a sunbed if that is the situation, drink water, and remember that the beach portion of the itinerary is supposed to make the day better, not turn you into a crispy, dehydrated version of yourself.
Fanari Lighthouse
Fanari, also known as the Agioi Theodoroi Lighthouse, is an easy coastal stop near Argostoli.
It is not a huge time commitment, which is exactly why it works on a short itinerary. Stop for the views, take a few photos, walk around for a bit, and then move on before the day starts getting too ambitious.
This is the kind of place that fits a 24-hour trip because it adds texture without taking over the entire schedule.
Food + Drinks
For dinner, keep it simple and stay in Argostoli.
The harbor and central area give you enough options without needing to turn the meal into another drive. On a one-day trip, this matters. You already spent the day moving around, swimming, walking, and pretending the sun was not personally targeting you.
Find a taverna, sit down, order something easy, and enjoy the fact that the hardest part of the day is over.

Base yourself in or near Argostoli if you only have one day.
Reserve a car in high season. Distances are manageable, but a vehicle saves time.
Bring cash for sunbeds, small cafes, and parking situations.
Pack water, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Parking by De Bosset Bridge is easiest earlier in the day.
Do not try to see the whole island in 24 hours.
Makris Gialos works well because it is close to Argostoli.
