24 Hours in Kraków, Poland: Auschwitz-Birkenau & Old Town
With just 24 hours in Kraków, Poland, you can land before noon, go straight to Auschwitz-Birkenau, spend the afternoon there, then get back into Old Town for dinner and a night walking the city.
That was our plan.
Our flight landed at Kraków Airport at 11:05 AM. Our Auschwitz-Birkenau tour started at 1:30 PM. The next morning we were back at the airport for a 7:15 AM flight.
There was not much room for anything to go wrong.
Somehow it worked.
The bigger surprise was Kraków itself. We came because Auschwitz-Birkenau was nearby. By the end of the night, I was wishing we had another day to walk around the city.
What 24 Hours in Kraków Looked Like
We went straight from Kraków Airport to Auschwitz-Birkenau, about an hour away.
Our English guided visit lasted from 1:30 PM until around 5:15 PM and included both Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau.
Afterward, we headed back into Kraków, checked into Mikołajska 5 Apartments in Old Town, dropped our stuff and walked outside.
That is when the entire day changed.
By complete accident, we had arrived during the annual Pierogi Festival.
The streets were packed. Food stands everywhere. Music, restaurants, people having drinks and celebrating.
It was awesome.
Kraków Was the Surprise
I had mostly thought of Kraków as the place we were staying because Auschwitz was nearby.
It never really crossed my mind that this could also be part of the destination. Sounds dumb - but that’s the truth.
We ate grilled Polish sausage and pierogi at Krakowska Koliba, had a couple of beers and then walked through Old Town and Rynek Główny.
No complicated nighttime itinerary.
No more transportation.
Just chillin.
After spending the entire day moving, that was exactly what I wanted.
We came to Kraków because Auschwitz-Birkenau was there.
I left wishing we had another day because of Kraków.
That was the part I did not expect.
What It Cost
A few of the actual numbers from our day:
Kraków Airport to Auschwitz-Birkenau: 204 złoty, about $49 at the time
Auschwitz-Birkenau guided visit: about $37.50 per person
Dinner for two at Krakowska Koliba: 113 złoty, about $30
Fast travel works when the pieces line up.
Sometimes it is too fast. Sometimes something goes sideways. Sometimes you spend 24 hours somewhere and cannot wait to leave.
Kraków worked.
I just wanted more of it.
Planning This Exact Trip?
If you are actually trying to repeat this route, I wrote a separate guide breaking down the airport timing, transportation, luggage rules, Auschwitz reservations, costs, what went wrong and what I would change next time.
Can You Visit Auschwitz and Kraków in One Day? We Did.
That is the one to read if you are trying to figure out whether this itinerary will actually work for your trip.
