24 Hours in Ischia, Italy: Ferry from Naples, Via Roma + Aragonese Castle
One day in Ischia itinerary. This Ischia day trip guide covers the ferry from Naples, Ischia Porto, Via Roma, Spiaggia di San Pietro, the Aragonese Castle, where to stay, where to eat, and what is actually worth your time if you only have one day on the island.
Ischia feels like Capri’s slightly more grounded cousin.
It is volcanic, green, busy in summer, and ridiculously beautiful without feeling quite as polished to death. If Capri is the island everyone already has an opinion about, Ischia feels like the place you visit and immediately start wondering if you could invent a new life there with fewer emails.
For a short trip, keep it simple. Arrive by ferry, stay around Ischia Porto, walk the town, get to the beach, see the Aragonese Castle, eat on Via Roma, and do not try to conquer the whole island in one day. That is how you turn a beautiful island into a spreadsheet with sunscreen.
The One-Day Itinerary
• Take the ferry from Naples to Ischia
• Arrive at Ischia Porto
• Walk from the port into town
• Explore the harbor and town center
• Stop near Spiaggia di San Pietro
• Wander Via Roma and Via Alfredo De Luca
• See the Aragonese Castle from the eastern side
• Have dinner on Via Roma
• Stay overnight near Ischia Porto if you can
• Take the ferry back to Naples or continue your trip
Getting to Ischia from Naples
There is no airport on Ischia, so you are coming by boat.
Most travelers arrive from Naples by ferry or hydrofoil. Ferries usually take longer but can be better if you have more luggage or want a calmer ride. Hydrofoils are faster, but they are more passenger-focused and can feel less forgiving if the sea is rough.
For a one-day Ischia trip, timing matters. Check the current ferry schedule before you build the day because your return boat is the thing that decides how relaxed this trip actually feels.
If you are coming from Naples, do not plan this like the ferry is a tiny detail. The ferry is the trip’s spine. Build around it.
Start in Ischia Porto
Ischia Porto is the easiest base if you only have one day.
You arrive by ferry, walk into town, and immediately have access to restaurants, shops, the harbor, beach areas, and evening streets without needing to solve the entire island transportation system.
That does not mean Ischia Porto is the only place worth seeing. It means it is the most practical place to start when time is short.
For a fast visit, practicality wins.
Walk Via Roma and the Town Center
Via Roma and the streets around Ischia Porto are where the quick version of Ischia starts to feel like a real trip.
You get shops, restaurants, people coming back from the beach, evening energy, and enough movement to make the island feel alive without requiring a detailed plan.
This is also where a one-day itinerary should slow down a little. Walk, look around, get a drink, find dinner, and let the island do some of the work.
Not every travel moment needs a timed entry ticket. Shocking, I know.
Beach Stop Near Spiaggia di San Pietro
If you are staying around Ischia Porto, Spiaggia di San Pietro is one of the easiest beach areas to work into a short visit.
It is close, simple, and useful. That matters when you only have one day and do not want to spend half of it chasing the “perfect” beach someone recommended in a comment section with no regard for your ferry schedule.
Ischia has more dramatic beach and thermal options if you have more time. For a quick stop, stay realistic.
Get in the water. Dry off. Keep moving.
See the Aragonese Castle
The Aragonese Castle is one of the main sights on Ischia, and it is worth building into your day even if you only see it from the outside.
The castle sits on a rocky islet connected to Ischia Ponte, east of Ischia Porto. If you have enough time, you can visit properly. If your schedule is tight, even seeing it from the eastern side gives the day a clear destination and one of the best views on the island.
Check opening times before going inside. The official castle site says it is generally open daily from 9 a.m. until sunset, with the last ticket issued 1.5 hours before closing, but seasonal changes and maintenance closures can affect visits.
Stay Here
Hotel Terme Oriente
I stayed at Hotel Terme Oriente near Ischia Porto, which worked well for a quick overnight because the location kept the trip easy.
For one night in Ischia, stay near the port unless you have a specific reason not to. You can get off the ferry, drop your bag, walk into town, eat nearby, and avoid spending your short visit moving yourself around like cargo.
A good location is not boring. It is the thing that keeps the trip from becoming annoying.
Food + Drinks
Ristorante Da Raffaele
Dinner at Da Raffaele worked well for this kind of trip because it is central, easy, and right in the part of Ischia Porto where you are probably already walking.
For a one-day visit, that is the move. Do not make dinner a separate expedition unless the restaurant is the entire reason you came. Eat somewhere good, nearby, and convenient enough that you can still enjoy the evening.
Travel planning becomes much easier when you stop pretending every meal needs to be a spiritual event.
Is One Day in Ischia Enough?
One day in Ischia is enough if you want a taste of the island: ferry arrival, Ischia Porto, town streets, a beach stop, the Aragonese Castle, dinner, and a feeling for the place.
One day is not enough if you want hot springs, multiple towns, beaches across the island, long coastal views, Forio, Sant’Angelo, and a relaxed island pace.
That is not a failure. That is just math.
Ischia is bigger and more layered than a lot of people expect. A day trip from Naples can absolutely be worth it, but the smarter version is focused. Pick one area and enjoy it instead of trying to collect the whole island before your ferry leaves.
