There Is Always Something To Fix On A House

I sound like an old man.

It’s true though. It is the American Dream, right? To own a home?
I’m not gonna lie. It’s awesome.

But you are always fixing something. No matter what state you get your home into - there is going to be something that fails.

Over the last 4 years I have spent an incredible amount of time - and money - renovating different rooms. It has been exciting, frustrating, eye-opening, pride-inducing, and expensive. Learning new skills and putting them to use, while making mistakes and learning from them is such a rewarding experience. So much so that I think I would make it my job if there was some sort of guarantee that I would have some constant work.

Painting, running electrical cable, tearing out walls, landscaping, putting up siding, using nail guns, hanging drywall, installing toilets, fixing IKEA sinks to the wall, putting up subway tile, sanding hardwood floor, and probably my least favorite - trying to get caulk to look good. I love it. I’m not good at it. But I’m getting better.

This stuff is challenging and fun. The stuff that makes me mad is when I put a ton of time and effort into it and then it looks shitty 6 months later.

There is wear and tear. That is inevitable. Everything gets dirty or worn out and you will have to replace it. Then sometimes after you install a brand new garbage disposal, you think you can put anything down it. You think an entire tupperware of spaghetti noodles will magically get chomped up and go down the drain. Wrong. You try an 15’ auger. Nope. You try a 25’ auger. Nope. Call the plumber and $453 later you can use the sink again for the first time in two weeks.

Then you get some moss on the roof. One day you go up to clean it cuz it can’t be that hard, right? One slip and almost losing a 15’ ladder onto the ground will make you reconsider. Hire a company and $1060 later you have the moss removed.

It would be nice to never fix anything. If it just always worked all the time. But we know that is impossible. We know life wants to challenge your patience sometimes.

Someday I will have a brand new home and it will be perfect. All the rooms will be immaculate. All the pipes will pass their contents. The roof won’t have moss. The drywall will look pretty cuz a professional did it. And I’ll sit down on the couch and look around and appreciate where I landed. Then I’ll get an itch because I’m bored and have to find a project. New houses sound terrible 🤣
