How to Get to Capri: Nearest Airport, Ferries from Naples & Sorrento

Capri does not have an airport, which clears up the first question pretty quickly.

If you are flying in, the closest and most useful airport is Naples International Airport, NAP. From there, you still need to get to the Port of Naples and take a ferry or hydrofoil across to Capri.

This sounds more complicated than it actually is.

The thing that trips people up is Naples itself. “Go to the port” is not quite enough information. Different boats leave from different terminals, and if you are standing at the wrong one with fifteen minutes before departure, suddenly Capri feels a lot farther away.

I learned this while island hopping around the Gulf of Naples. The ferry part is easy. Picking the right ferry terminal is the part you need to pay attention to.

The fastest answer

If you are flying specifically to visit Capri, fly into Naples International Airport.

From the airport, take the Alibus or a taxi to the ferry terminal printed on your ticket, then take the boat to Marina Grande, Capri’s main port.

If you are already staying in Sorrento, skip Naples entirely and take a direct ferry from Sorrento to Capri.

If you are already on the Amalfi Coast, check for a direct seasonal ferry before backtracking toward Naples or Sorrento.

That last option is what we did in 2026.

Does Capri have an airport?

No.

There is no commercial airport on Capri, so every normal trip to the island includes a ferry or hydrofoil.

The nearest major airport is Naples International Airport, also called Naples Capodichino Airport. Naples Airport has a direct Alibus connection to both the city center and the port. The airport lists stops at Piazza Garibaldi near Napoli Centrale, Porta di Massa, and the Beverello port area. Airport to port is roughly 35 minutes under normal conditions.

The current Alibus fare is €5.

That makes the basic route:

Naples Airport → Naples ferry terminal → Capri

You do not need to take a train into Naples first unless some other part of your trip requires it.

Which Naples port do you need for Capri?

This is the part I would check twice.

Naples has multiple ferry terminals, and Capri boats do not all leave from exactly the same place.

The two names you are most likely to see are:

Molo Beverello
This is the big one for high-speed passenger boats and hydrofoils. NLG’s Naples-to-Capri service, for example, operates from Molo Beverello.

Calata Porta di Massa
This terminal is also used for island ferry traffic, including Caremar services. Caremar maintains ticket offices at both Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa.

The good news is that Alibus serves both areas.

The important lesson is simple:

Do not put “Port of Naples” into your brain and stop reading. Look at the actual departure terminal on your ferry ticket.

I talked about this in my Ischia episode too. I knew I needed a ferry from Naples, but that was only half the answer. You still have to make sure you are standing at the right part of the port.

That is an extremely stupid way to miss a boat.

How to get from Naples Airport to the Capri ferry

You have two good choices.

The cheapest is Alibus. It runs between Naples Airport, Napoli Centrale and the port, and it currently costs €5.

The easiest is a taxi.

If I had plenty of time, I would take Alibus.

If my flight was late, traffic looked ugly, or my ferry time was getting uncomfortable, I would get in a taxi and remove one variable from the day.

Fast travel works because you know when to save five euros and when to stop making life harder.

How long is the ferry from Naples to Capri?

It depends on the boat.

NLG’s high-speed services from Molo Beverello can make the trip in roughly 45 to 50 minutes.

Caremar operates both faster and conventional ferry services. Faster crossings can be around an hour, while conventional ferries can take closer to 80 to 90 minutes.

If I only had one day in Capri, I would favor the faster boat unless the price difference was ridiculous.

Half an hour each direction is an hour of your Capri day.

I would rather spend that hour wandering around Capri than sitting inside a boat congratulating myself for saving twelve bucks.

How much is the Naples to Capri ferry?

The exact price depends on the operator and service.

As of 2026, NLG lists Naples Beverello to Capri at about €25 one way for a standard adult fare, plus Capri’s landing contribution. Luggage can also carry an additional charge.

Other operators and ferry types vary, so I would not plan your trip around one permanent price.

Check your actual travel date.

The schedules matter more than the theoretical cheapest ticket anyway.

How to get to Capri from Sorrento

If you are already staying in Sorrento, this is easier.

Direct ferries run from Sorrento to Capri, and NLG runs multiple daily departures during the main season. The crossing is generally around 20 to 30 minutes depending on the sailing.

Do not go north to Naples just so you can get on another boat heading south again.

Take the direct ferry.

One thing to keep straight:

Marina Piccola in Sorrento is not Marina Piccola on Capri.

Your ferry arrives at Marina Grande on Capri.

Italy has apparently decided every traveler should complete one small geography exam before being allowed near the water.

How to get to Capri from the Amalfi Coast

This is where people sometimes create way too much transportation for themselves.

If you are already staying somewhere like Positano, Amalfi, Minori or elsewhere along the Amalfi Coast, check the seasonal direct ferries before heading back toward Naples.

In August 2026, we stayed overnight in Minori and took a morning Alicost ferry straight to Capri.

Our ferry left Minori at 9:05 a.m. and was scheduled into Capri at 10:30.

That route made way more sense than returning inland just so we could say we left from Naples.

Always check the coast first.

Where does the Capri ferry arrive?

You arrive at Marina Grande, the main port on Capri.

And the arrival is kind of ridiculous.

The first time I went, I remember the ferry rolling into Marina Grande and immediately understanding why everybody keeps coming here. The cliffs, buildings, boats and water all pile up in front of you at once.

Pictures do a bad job of explaining it.

Marina Grande is the island’s main arrival point for ferries and passenger boats.

But Marina Grande is not Capri Town.

Capri Town is above you.

Now you have to get up there.

Marina Grande to Capri Town

The easiest choice is the funicular.

It runs from Marina Grande up to Capri Town in about four minutes. Current fares are inexpensive, but check the latest price when you travel.

We used it on our 2026 trip and it is exactly what most people should do.

Get off the boat, find the funicular, go uphill, get on with your day.

You can also take a taxi or bus.

Or you can walk.

I actually walked up on my earlier Capri trip because I did not fully understand where I was going and accidentally found the route through Via Truglio and the stairways climbing toward town.

It turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the day.

You move through narrow paths, houses and weird little corners that do not feel designed for tourists. Then eventually you pop out around Capri Town and the Piazzetta.

If you are carrying luggage or it is 90 degrees outside, I would take the funicular.

If you are traveling light and want to see a little more of Capri under your feet, the walk is absolutely doable.

Can you store luggage at Marina Grande?

Yes.

There is luggage storage at Marina Grande, which is extremely useful if you are doing Capri as a day trip or passing through with your bags.

I used it on my earlier trip because I was not spending the night.

That means you do not have to drag your suitcase through Capri Town all day just because you arrived with it.

Even better solution: travel with one little backpack.

That has solved a shocking percentage of my transportation problems.

How do you get around Capri?

You do not need a rental car.

For most short trips, your transportation is:

funicular + bus + walking

Capri Town itself is heavily pedestrian-oriented, and buses connect Capri Town with places like Anacapri, Marina Piccola and Marina Grande.

On our 2026 visit, we used the bus system to get around between Capri, Marina Piccola and Anacapri.

The buses are small because the roads are small, and they can get extremely crowded in summer.

You are not navigating some gigantic transit network.

The island is small.

The bigger problem is usually the number of humans trying to get on the same tiny bus.

Should you book the Capri ferry ahead of time?

For summer, weekends or a tight one-day trip, I would.

Especially the return ferry.

The outbound trip is exciting and everybody is ready to improvise.

The return boat is when you suddenly realize your hotel is in Naples, your flight leaves tomorrow, and Capri has no interest in building you a bridge.

If your schedule matters, book the sailing you actually need.

Also check the timetable again close to the trip. Operators can change schedules seasonally and rough weather can disrupt ferry service.

How much time should you leave between your flight and ferry?

I would leave at least two hours between your scheduled arrival at Naples Airport and a ferry you absolutely cannot miss.

That is my planning recommendation, not an official minimum.

The airport-to-port trip itself can be fairly quick, but your plane can arrive late. Getting off takes time. Traffic exists. You still have to find the correct terminal, possibly collect or buy tickets, and board.

Could you land and make a ferry much faster?

Absolutely.

You could also build your entire vacation around your airline arriving exactly on schedule.

I prefer hobbies with better odds.

Can Capri be a day trip from Naples?

Yes.

Capri is actually built pretty well for a one-day visit because the basic route is simple once you understand it:

Naples → Marina Grande → Capri Town → explore → Marina Grande → Naples

You can add Anacapri, Marina Piccola or other stops depending on how much time you have, but I would not turn one day into a frantic attempt to collect every named attraction on the island.

Capri hits pretty fast.

You get off the ferry and immediately understand what the big deal is.

If you want my actual one-day route once you arrive, use the full Capri guide:

Naples or Sorrento for Capri?

This does not need to be complicated.

If you are flying into Naples, use Naples.

If you are staying in Sorrento, use Sorrento.

If you are already on the Amalfi Coast, look for a direct seasonal ferry.

Do not add a train ride, bus ride and taxi ride because somebody online told you one ferry crossing is technically twelve minutes shorter.

The best Capri transportation route is usually the one that starts closest to where you already are.

What I would do

If I were flying into Naples and going directly to Capri, I would book a high-speed ferry from Molo Beverello, leave enough time after the flight that the day did not immediately become stressful, then take Alibus or a taxi from the airport to the port.

Once I reached Marina Grande, I would take the funicular into Capri Town unless I specifically wanted the uphill walk.

If I were staying overnight, I would use Capri Town as my base again. From there, I could walk the center, use the buses for Anacapri or Marina Piccola, have dinner, and head back to Marina Grande the next morning.

That is almost exactly how our 2026 stop worked.

And spending the night changed Capri for me.

My earlier visit was a day trip. The island was beautiful, busy and almost absurdly photogenic. In 2026, we stayed. We wandered Capri Town in the evening, took buses around the island, ate dinner, got hit by a middle-of-the-night thunderstorm, and woke up there the next morning.

The roof leaked onto my bag.

The fridge barely worked.

The blow dryer was useless.

Still an awesome room.

That is travel.

The actual answer

If you searched how to get to Capri, here is what matters:

There is no Capri airport.

Fly into Naples.

Check the exact Naples ferry terminal on your ticket.

Take the ferry to Marina Grande.

Use the funicular to reach Capri Town.

If you are already in Sorrento or on the Amalfi Coast, check direct ferries before routing yourself back through Naples.

That is it.

Once you understand those five things, Capri stops being confusing.

Then the ferry pulls into Marina Grande, you look up at the island, and transportation becomes the least interesting thing about the day.
